Baku - 獏 - "tapir"
•About this Yokai •
A mythical chimera, tapirs said to be made of the leftover parts of other animals. Considered auspicious, Baku have been used as good luck charms for centuries. Particularly used for warding nightmares & evil.
Baku are also said to eat human dreams, especially nightmares, if you place a picture of it under your pillow and say to yourself “Baku come eat my dreams!” However, care must be taken, not to do this too often, as it’s said that if the baku remains hungry, it may also eat your hopes and aspirations… Evil spirits & yokai are terrified of Baku so it’s said that good fortune follows them wherever they might be.
• PopCulture: the pokemon known as drowzee and Musharna are said to be based on baku.
