Tenjo kudari - 天井下 - “Ceiling Hanger”

An ugly Yokai that pops out and hangs down from the ceiling of old homes in an attempt to terrify the unsuspecting. - Attics & crawl spaces are a spooky place: Ceiling mould, holes and mysterious wet spots would indicate yokais presence (or some other sort of suspicious activity) this yokai is The result of people gossiping about bodies & corpses being hidden in the crawl spaces of old/abandoned places.

•History & Early appearances•

This yokai originally appears in Gazu Hyakki Yagyo (1776) and seems to be Toriyama Sekien doing a silly nod towards those dark rumors. (There are actually a few other yokai which brush up on this topic as well! )
