•About this yokai•

Isogashi - JP: いそがし

Isogashi are yokai spirits of manic busyness and work, they feed off of human restlessness. Often considered a type of Tsukimono, they're a type of yokai that possess a human before being seen. - Those possessed by Isogashi eventually start running around frantically trying to get work done in the frantic, manic manner of a workaholic. They become crazed blue monsters without regard for others or themselves, eventually stripping down to a single article of clothing, bulging eyes and a big floppy tongue hanging out behind them as they run about completing tasks... Thankfully it’s not an unpleasant experience and the person experiences a sort of euphoria in completing work. (They do look a bit silly while doing so, however.)

•History and Early Appearances. •

Isogashi appears unnamed in some of the earliest yokai picture scrolls, but it was first given this name proper in 1832's 百鬼夜行絵巻 (松井文庫) (Hyakki Yagyo Emaki (Matsui Bunko) –

Toriyama Sekien had also included an interpretation of this yokai based on earlier depictions in Hyakki tsurezure bukuro. (1779) he gave it a different name & included additional lore, the two would come to be seen as different creatures. - See also: tenjoname.
