Flambeau Ambler. - [Fearsome Critter]

Flambeau Ambler – [Fearsome Critter/Cryptid] - aka Penobscot Ambler, etc. (Latin: Piscis carniversa.)

• About this Critter: Shades of the "All Blue!" - This spectacular, legendary fish from Wisconsin area (Flambeau river) & Maine (Penobscot river) [& anywhere in-between] had qualities possessed by no other! - What is known is that the fish supposedly had great potential for cooking: "When fried over a wood or gas range stove, the fish tasted like gourmet southern fried chicken, when boiled in clear lake water it tasted like lobster; roasted over a campfire it tasted succulent pig, if broiled, people swore they where eating prime t-bone steak." - Unfortunately, the fish also attracted greedy fry-pan fishermen who measured the joy of fishing with how many they could bring to the pan. (& subsequently to their wallets.) The creature was soon over-fished using extreme methods (such as TNT!) and the creature supposedly went extinct sometime in the early 1900s, it was quickly forgotten, thought of as a myth & quickly rejected by both science & cryptozoology.

• History: The source to this one is shared between Walker D Wyman's "Mythical Creatures of USA and Canada" [1978] & several papers advertising the book. The notes state that "One old timer who remembered the taste of the fish was Clyde Wynia" from Mashfeild Wiscons in a letter dated March 29th 1973 - the papers called him a Mythologist but the locals perhaps remember him better as "the artist who excavated fossils of extinct Iron Age animals" in 'Jurustic Park.' - Wyman also mentioned that John Gould (a columnist for the Christian Science Monitor) had claimed that the fish (along with other mythical creatures found across the Americas) likely originated in Maine on the Penobscot. - In the entry, Wyman acted perplexed at how that could be (especially with river traffic being as it is)” the fish would have to have migrated from the Atlantic coast to the gulf of mexico, up the missisippi, through the chippewa and to the Flambeau river” - Some of the papers advertising the book and other later descriptions of the fish have speculated that the strange fish could 'amble over land' but Wyman's description states otherwise. ...Of course there's no definitive proof that this fish actually did or did not exist if it was simply silly old timers joking about having tasted something unkown, (which brings a few other critter-fish to mind) because its described so vaguely, there's no telling what it might or might not have looked like too. - One thing for certian, I wish I could have tasted it...
