Chōchin-Obake (JP:提灯お化け) - [Yokai | Tsukumogami.]
• About this Yokai: Chochin obake are Haunted lanterns & a common type of Tsukumogami (JP: つくも髪) Antiquated & well used but neglected, haunted objects that have sprung to life after a long existence of 100 (or so) years. - Eyes & a long lolling tongue that pops out from the any holes they might have. - Lamp oil is their favorite snack, Sometimes they breathe fire. - (in which case they might also go by "Bura Bura"(不落不落) instead.
•Early Appearances & History:
Chochin-Obake appear along side many other object yokai in Toriyama Sekiens, 1781 [百器徒然袋] Gazu Hyakki Tsurezure Bukuro as a yokai titled "bura bura" its seen spitting fire.]
The popularity of this yokai might have to do with advertisement & illustrations surrounding 1825 story and play, Yotsuya Kaidan (四谷怪談) in particular, "Oiwa" appears as a vengeful ghost possessing a lamp.
Today: Chochin Obake popularly appear as stock ghost character Childrens Media, an enemy in more Video Games & Anime, more than one can possibly try to list!
