•About this Yokai•
Furaribi – ふらり火
A bird like yokai with a face like a mutt, it usually appears wreathed in flames, it appears to flutter around aimlessly in the distance especially close to rivers, spouting wild cold flames wherever it goes... its often said to be a human soul or hinotama
• history & early appearances •
It appears across many early yokai picture scrolls & in Toriyama Sekiens gazu hyakki yagyo (1776) –
There’s no text included with any of the original pictures or sekiens book so it’s hard to say for sure what the nature of this yokai might actually be, its often associated with the various “Burari-bi” & various gristly murder stories of Toyama prefectures Castle & is often said to be the remains of a human soul.... however! - These stories & where associated with the yokai later on, in retrospect & because the originals contain no explanation... you could say, as a yokai, its truly aimless!
