Shirime (JP: 尻目) are a type of Nopperabo (faceless) ghost, earliest appearance was in the works of famous Haiku Poet Yosai Buson's Yokai Emaki [蕪村妖怪絵巻] written 1754-1757 – The legend goes something like this:

"Once upon a time, a samurai was walking down a dusty old path near Kyoto in the dead of night, when suddenly, a tall figure walking down the pathway approached: The samurai asked "who goes there???" nervously readying his blade. – "Do you have a moment?" the figure asked. - But, before the samurai could respond: The hulking figure turned around backwards and suddenly bent over... in place of his anus was an intensely bright glowing eyeball!!!! The samurai was so shocked that he ran away screaming."

– scary huh?
