Setsubun Oni - [Festival masks] -

⚠️This Bio is a WIP! Stickers are available now! But do check back later! - For the finished description. ⚠️

• About these masks: Oni are demons, Brutish Ogres of Jigoku (hell) where they serve under King Enma. Often seen wielding massive spiked metal clubs called "kanabo" and wearing a tigers pelt. (Showing off how tough/intimidating they are!) they have 3 fingers on each hand said to represent buddhist vices. - Oni are also said to have the teeth of a tiger & the horns of an ox! -Humans can also become Oni (while they're still alive) especially If they let their emotions control them (Example: like Hannya, see also: Kiyohime, Hashi-hime. ) Or if they act poorly, against society (Example: like a Bandit or a Tyrants, see also: Shuten Douji, Kidomaru.) -

[Sam's version of The Red oni and Blue oni story goes here.]

• A few Oni related festivals:

  • Setsubun & "Mamemaki" Red oni masks are popularly worn during setsubun (every febuary) used as part of 'mamemaki' a bad-luck-cleansing-ritual in which you go to (a shrine and throw roasted soybeans at a person donning an oni mask and chant: "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" or "Demons out! Good luck in!" there are a few different variants to this saying & not all shrines celebrate setsubun. (in some places, mostly to the north-east, Oni are seen as good luck or are worshipped as kami!) - so out of respect: the chant can change to (something more like: "Oni wa uchi! Fuku wa uchi" ("Good luck come
And oni come in too!") - After throwing the beans and scaring the bad luck away, its good luck to pick up and eat the same number of beans as your age, plus one more for extra luck!
  • Namahage. - description & link goes here.

It should be noted that the Oni masks used in Noh theatre -[some good examples here] tend to look much different than the one's i've drawn today [which where inspired by popular festival masks] - [for more about specific Oni, check out my oni section!]
