Hannya, (Kijoh) - "Mask of Wisdom" - [Noh Masks]

• About this mask: This mask represents the very definition of a woman scorned; this mask represents a woman who has become so enveloped in rage & that she has become a furious female oni (also called a "kijo.") - Her affection has turned to jealousy, her adoration in to resentment, and her passion has changed into blind rage. She has become 'wise' to her lovers unfaithful ways. (but, yet, still, a subtle sadness (Perhaps the feeling of betrayal) is still seen in her eyes.) -–Like many Noh masks: the Hannyas face changes expression depending on the direction the mask is tilted, when looking down it appears almost as if its crying! But if it glances upwards it appears as an outraged glare, filled with nothing but hatred & a spiteful desire for vengeance.

The colour of the mask can denote social standing as well; red was most often used for low class/commoners -White & Blue where typically standard used for high class beautys or rich nobles - While deep red or black where most often used for demons (or those who where "never truly human") - Alternatively The horns and teeth can get longer or more serpent like for those too. – (Often called; "Hannya Honari" - See also; the story of Kiyo Hime!

• The famous Noh play: "Aoi No Ue" features this mask to represent the vengeful spirit of Lady Rokujo, as she is exorcized by a famous Onmyoji; the demon screams: "OH HOW HORRIBBLE! THE VOICE OF WISDOM, IS LIKE A DEMON!!!"

⚠️ As an important side note: Hannya masks are favoured by the Yakuza (Japanese Gangs & Mafia.) as a subject for their tattoo art, usually symbolizing that they show no mercy and that they are unforgiving. - Someone with a tatoo of a hannya will often hold a grudge. – (Well, either that or their just a theatre nerd! 🤓) – Regardless, the yakuza certainly don't joke around, so, if you meet someone with a Hannya tattoo: its probably better not to piss them off!!! Many bath houses and pools around japan will not let people with tattoos in for this reason. ⚠️
