Ittan Momen (JP: 一反木綿) - [Yokai | Tsukumogami]
• About this Yokai: A Dangerous Tsukumogami (Haunted Antique) this unravelled bolt of white cloth which was used to make Clothing but it went unused and was forgotten, neglected for decades and so it came to life. – Now It slithers through the air like a serpent at twilight, strangling and suffocating unsuspecting victims to death! - Though, If you're a friend to yokai, perhaps it will give you a ride instead...
• History & Early Appearances: Yokai similar in description to "Ittan-momen" appear in some of the earliest Hyakki yagyo Emaki picture scrolls dating back to the Muromachi & Edo periods -
[The white cloth yokai that appears in old picture scrolls: Interestingly the yokai depicted here is depicted with furry hands and legs as if there was an animal was hiding under the cloth (leading to the theory that its a transformed tanuki or kitsune.)]
There are also various legends from Kagoshima prefecture (& elsewhere) having to do with sightings of cloth or futon shaped flying objects. - [See: the yokai database for more on that.]

[18th century - 怪奇談絵詞 (Kaikidan Ekotoba)] - A white, blobby looking yokai was encountered in Fukuoka prefecture, it was said to have measured about 180 centimeters (6 ft) across & flew through the air. – (People at the time believed this creature was a tanuki that had shape-shifted.) for more about the other yokai see also: Kuchibe-inu]
The yokai's general modern 'flying carpet'-like appearance is largely because of its inclusion in Shigeru Mizuki's Gegege Kitaro where it is a regular cast member.
[Some other similar 'Vengeful Cloth Tsukumogami" include: "Jatai" (蛇帯), "Kosode-no-te" (小袖の手), "Hatahiro"(機尋) & "Shirouneri" (白溶裔) & "Boroboroton" (暮露暮露団). ]
