Description
Akaname (JP: 垢嘗) – [yokai]
•About this yokai: Akaname are disgusting little red-faced goblin-like yokai who delight in licking up dirt, bathtub grime & sludge with their long bumpy tongues. They appear in filthy restrooms at night usually while you are asleep. – Though that might sound helpful? – it is far from a maid: its presence actually amplifies the spread of disease (and that can draw in other more dangerous yokai that are associated with filth or general sickness.) – so, if you have a feeling you’ve seen one of these recently it is a reminder; better clean up! (👁👅👁)
• Early appearances & History: it’s yet another yokai featured in Gazu Hyakki Yagyo [画図百鬼夜行] [by Toriyama sekien, 1776] Though he did not give commentary for this entry; the yokai is hiding near a bath (as evidenced by the washtubs & kimono.)
