yuki onna: 雪女 - Snow woman
about this yokai: The spirit of someone who perished in the snow, often times a mountain kami. Yuki Onna are particularly beautiful, yet violent ghosts, appearing in blizzards and luring foolish travellers to their icy doom. Its hard to tell from a distance if you're dealing with a Yuki Onna, because they appear to be human & their opaque, snow white skin & kimonos also blend in with the snow (so its difficult to tell if they're even there!) One tell tale sign is that like most ghosts they lack feet and thus cant leave foot prints in the snow. – A touch of their skin will sap all the warmth from your body. – its said that the yuki onnas breath is cold enough to freeze you into a solid block of ice. – Although its uncommon, some YukiOnna fall in love with their prey and have been known to be good wives & even mothers - Unfortunately this often ends in tragedy, either with one party either melting or the other freezing. - There are several regional variations of this yokai & many different stories about Yuki-Onna across japan
History: YukiOnna appear in early yokai emaki scrolls such as Hyakki Zukan (1737) & She also appears in Gazu Hyakki Yagyo by Toriyama Sekien (1776) The pokemon known as frosslass was also inspired by the yuki onna.
