BakeKujira (JP:化鯨) are The vengeful spirits of whales which hold grudges against humans for over fishing & hunting them. - Supposedly it appeared off the coast of Shimane prefecture accompanied by strange fish & birds the likes which nobody had ever seen before, a fisherman threw his harpoon at it to no effect & the whale then delivered a “curse & disease” to a nearby village.
History: Although its a very popular yokai to illustrate these days (and who can blame anyone, it’s description paints such a cool image, right???) - the creatures actual folklore/historical roots are murky at best. – It seems that for the most part this yokai it was most likely an invention of Shigeru Mizuki who likely based it off of the many shrines dotted about japan which are dedicated to whales that fed the masses. it makes enough sense that there would be a Yokai whale as well right? 🤷♀️ Mizuki also wrote about a man who ate so much whale meat he became a large whale shaped person, but he didn’t complete the illustration because he got sick! (he later said it was cursed!!!)
