Ittan Momen (JP: 一反木綿)
• About this Yokai: a dangerous Tsukumogami (Haunted Antique) bolt of thin, unused white cotton cloth that's 1 tan in length (about 10.6 meters in length by 30 centimetres in width) – it's really long. – It slithers through the air like a serpent at twilight, it strangles and suffocates unsuspecting people to death, scary! - Though, If you're a friend to yokai, perhaps it will give you a ride instead.
• History: Yokai similar to "Ittanmomen" (& sometimes labelled as such) appear in some of the earliest Hyakki yagyo Emaki picture scrolls dating back to the muromachi and early edo periods, they're usually seen dancing among the other yokai & tsukumogami: interestingly they have furry hands and feet as if its an animal was hiding under the cloth (often said to be a tanuki) this wasn't uncommon at all in early yokai scrolls & yokai bestiarys. - The yokai's modern 'flying carpet'-like appearance is largely thanks to Shigeru Mizuki's Gegege Kitaro where the yokai appears as a regular cast member.
[the white tanuki cloth yokai that appears in early picture scrolls]
[18th century - 怪奇談絵詞 (Kaikidan Ekotoba)] - The white, blobby looking yokai was encountered in Fukuoka prefecture, it was said to have measured about 180 centimeters (6 ft) across & flew through the air. (People at the time believed this creature was a tanuki that had shape-shifted.) - [I've drawn a seperate sticker the crowdog already.]
[Some other similar 'Possessed/Vengeful, Cloth, Yokai and Tsukumogami" include: "Jatai" (蛇帯), "Kosode-no-te" (小袖の手), "Hatahiro"(機尋) & "Shirouneri" (白溶裔) "Boroboroton" (暮露暮露団)] -
There are also various legends from Kagoshima prefecture & elsewhere having to do with sightings of cloth-shaped, unidentified flying objects. - see: the yokai database for more on that. – [Incidentally I can name more than a few cryptids & aliens that resemble this too, in the past such things where called the 'schmoo phenomena.')]
