Smokin’ Oni – 鬼 – Hell in a tobacco shop – [Yokai]

•About this yokai: Just an Oni from Jigoku, Smokin’ on a Sinner. – Souls who are deemed unworthy of rebirth in the five upper Buddhist realms soon find themselves in the worst afterlife of all—Jigoku, one/64,000+ tailor made Buddhist hell’s. – I’m not religious in any sense. so I won’t try to explain it in depth, but if you smoke too much without considering others- This is probably how you’d pay! 🚭👹

This oni design was largely inspired by “Hell in a Tobacco Shop” by Nichosai(耳鳥斎)(1751-1803) he illustrated a fantastic toba-e comic-esq picture scroll all about oni torturing people in somewhat humorous/ironic ways.– The cigar, The cigarette holder and the netsuke are all made of people. (i love how happy mr bag is. compared to the others)
