Spam Musubi – 結び, スパムむすび
About: Spam glorious spam! A Hawaiian-Japanese fusion; Teriyaki-soy-glazed, canned Spam served on plain rice, believed to have originated shortly after WW2. – (when spam was a common ration.) – Technically, this is a lot closer to ‘Omusubi’ (Riceballs) rather than proper Nigiri Sushi because the rice is served plain! The Lack of vinegar is what makes the difference between sushi and other rice-based dishes!). – I have a lot of Hawaiian-Japanese friends who would no doubt mention/question this one’s absence, so I wanted to include it. – They say it often goes well served with cheese or an egg! 🙂
