Philadelphia roll. – [Sushi/Foodlore] – katakana: フィリーロール (philly roll.)

• About this roll: Yet another Japanese-American fusion an ‘Uramaki roll’ served rice-side-out & filled with creme cheese, covered with thinly sliced salmon lox (paper-thin sliced smoked salmon.) – The Philadelphia roll was supposedly invented (or at the very least was earliest named) in the 1980s by Japanese-American & locally proclaimed, “Queen of Sushi”; Madamn Ai Saito – a sushi chef and ambassador, Who invented it after eating creme cheese & lox with her Jewish friends. The roll was created to help demystify sushi in the eyes of westerners; acting as a sort of familiar entry point, it must have worked because its still sold nation-wide to this very day! – A very similar roll also filled with creme cheese is also known as the “Seattle roll” (its especially common in Canada & the PNW.) Often filled with sliced up bits of smoked salmon instead of on top, where I’m from its often served with a thicker slice of salmon on top or without a topping at all! (I personally find the creme cheese to be a bit much, but i wont yuck anyone’s yum!) for another uramaki utilizing smoked salmon; see also: BC roll)
