Description
- Onigiri – おにぎり- (Musubi, Riceballs.)
Plain Japanese Rice with something tasty inside (often pickled plumbs or teriyaki meat: Though the combinations are endless, so much so that there are restaurants that specialize in onigiri alone!) A sheet of crispy nori is used like a wrapper to hold onto it. – Onigiri is notably NOT a type of sushi. – Rather it’s a style of “musubi.” (The absence of the vinegar added to the rice is what makes the difference!) Onigiri is a beloved street food with many new variations being invented daily. (you could fill a book with the variations alone, there’s no ‘correct way’ of preparing it.)The simple ingredients make it something which street vendors can easily prepare fresh. – Despite how I drew it; this treat also does not directly take its name from ’Oni.’ (Ogre like demons.) However! – Some insist that Onigiri are triangular in shape to resemble mountains! (Where Oni are often said to hang out and make their bases!) – Fossilized riceballs have been discovered in the mountains of japan, dating back to the 5th century!
