Description

Kutabe – クタベ

• About this Yokai:

“Hey…so uh… If you look at me, you will be able to get rid of that bad disease?”

its… *squints* …Kutabe? – Better known as the ‘Hakutaku’ or in China as ‘Bai Ze’ – An all knowing beast who’s knowledge about yokai and the evils of the world surpasses all others…  Like Amabie and others, his picture would be drawn and sold as a talisman to thwart disease and scare off bad yokai…

This one originates from a 1918 text book which dates the original image back to 1827 – Kutabe are more accurately said to be a variant of Kudan who was also popular at the time (1827–1829) – Toyama prefecture [where the hakutaku was said to have paid a visit.] ‘s airport obviously likes this version of him too because this statue was recently put up in the airport in 2020
