Description
Kuchibe Inu – くちばしいぬ – Beaked dog.
•About this Yokai: A puppy, said to born with a bird like face.
• History and early appearances: The original was from 怪奇談絵詞 (Kaikidan Ekotoba) – a yokai picture scroll with pictures and descriptions of 33 unique yokai. The section it was included with has two illustrations, describing two yokai that appeared in the same area. – The description for Kuchibe Inu translates roughly as follows:
“During the Kanpo era (1741-1744), a dog in the Karajin-machi district of Fukuoka gave birth to a puppy with a face like a crow: the puppy ate rice and fish, but it died young.”
I like the theory that because the puppy was illustrated with a ribbon around its neck: it was likely a pet cared for, no matter however short a time it was around. 😌
