Description

Jubboko – 樹木子 じゅぼっこ –  [yokai/bonsai]

•About this Yokai: Looks like a normal tree: but it sustains itself on humans blood, it thrives in places where great battles or massive executions where held. its branches are said to sway towards people that pass by, if you cut a branch, blood will trickle out like sap.🩸

All reliable sources which I’ve read have said that the jubboko might not actually come from folklore or have a mythological origin attached to it (but rather it might be an invention of Shigeru Mizuki, creator of Gegege Kitaro.) – however, its a popular subject of many yokai bestiaries regardless… “Man eating trees” certainly do exist in other cultures/folklores/mythologies and there are certainly plenty of tree spirits across Japans folklore, so i digress: this blood sucking tree fits right in!

However! a document was found about jubboko recently(2024) from shortly before mizuki wrote about it! Ill refer to @uncannyjapan podcast here

[last pics Background is from Shigeru Mizukis: Yokai Dictionary.] – interestingly, his version does not have leaves. – so i think most modern artists, take their Inspiration from shin megami tenseis version for their illustrations. [though to be fair, the blood red/black leaves are a pretty obvious design choice.] another for my yokai bonsai set.
