Description
Eho-maki – (恵方巻き) – (Double extra large, The Lucky Directional Roll.)
• About this roll: Eho maki are a more recent tradition which takes place during Setsubun (February 3rd.) An extra large, thick sushi roll, stuffed with 7 locally sourced ingredients (which change depending where you are; these lucky ingredients are typically said to be chosen because of the Shichifukujin (7 gods of luck!) – It’s said that if you’re able to finish the entire massive roll in one go (in complete silence, whilst facing that year’s dedicated zodiac direction.) Then your wish will come true! – Supposedly the tradition started with Geisha from Osaka sometime in the early 1910’s: but it was later re-established via promotions at Kansai Conbini stores towards the mid-80s! – Regardless, The tradition of directional magic is related to ancient astrological magic practised by court-hired sorcerers known as “Onmyōji!” thats a bit much to explain all at once so i’ll save it for another time. – [Incidentally, according to some, cutting the roll is said to be like cutting your luck in half! something I wish I’d was aware of before I finished my drawing! Woops!!]
