• About this Cryptid •
Jackalope are cornerstones of American folklore and are perhaps the most well known of all fearsome critters: everyone knows the Jackalope!! why, its a Hare with horns like an antelope of course!! – This Lanky lagomorph leapt and lunged at unlucky cowfolk and lumbermen alike! legends say that it was able to mimic human speech and song!! (It sang in a deep southern tenor voice) it’s favourite drink was whiskey! Apparently it’s milk makes for a powerful aphrodisiac In tonics and snake oil tinctures.. A popular subject of taxidermy and North American kitsch!
Most often seen hung up on walls of truck stops, pubs & bars! (The origin of the taxidermies can be traced back to Doug Harris, 1939) The city of Douglas Wyoming recognizes itself as 'the home of the Jackalope'
American tales of horned hares were likely inspired by sightings of rabbits infected with the Shope papilloma virus - It causes horn‑ and antler‑like tumors to grow in various places on a rabbit's head and body. But— It’s worth note that there are mythical horned rabbits that have existed elsewhere on earth since before the 1400s!
